General
Ampoxe Ltd is a North East England start-up developing ground-breaking solid-state battery technology. Their focus spans transport electrification and grid energy storage. Their patent-pending innovation addresses the scalability and performance issues holding back solid-state batteries. A credible environmental baseline has become a priority as Ampoxe moves towards commercialisation. This supports internal design decisions and meets the expectations of investors and partners with demanding carbon accounting requirements. The Tees Valley Net Zero programme engaged Below280, as Decerna, to conduct an LCA of Ampoxe’s solid-state battery unit.
Outline & Objectives
Below280 completed an LCA of the materials and components of Ampoxe’s solid-state battery unit, following the ISO 14040/44 four-stage framework. Working from Ampoxe’s bill of materials, the study established a cradle-to-gate system boundary covering all raw material inputs. Below280 used openLCA software and the Ecoinvent v3.11 database, alongside bespoke-built background processes. The resulting suite of documents covers goal and scope, life cycle inventory, and impact assessment and interpretation, providing a complete, standards-compliant environmental baseline.
Below280 also analysed material alternatives alongside the baseline assessment, comparing the potential environmental impacts of suggested material swaps to quantify the difference each substitution could make.
The goal was to give Ampoxe quantified, material-level environmental data before Ampoxe commits production infrastructure, supporting informed design decisions and the company’s broader commercial and regulatory trajectory. The objectives were to deliver a rigorous ISO 14040/44-compliant LCA and identify the materials driving the cell’s environmental profile. Below280 also aimed to provide an evidential foundation for investor engagement and structure the assessment for iterative updating, including future EU Battery Regulation compliance.
Outcomes
Ampoxe now holds a standards-compliant LCA that quantifies their battery unit’s environmental profile at the material level. It clearly identifies which inputs drive impact and by how much. his enables targeted design changes ahead of any production commitment, informed by comparative analysis of material alternatives. It also supports investor discussions. Partners with demanding carbon accounting requirements gain clear evidence of environmental due diligence. It supports future regulatory submissions, including adaptation for the EU Battery Regulation’s LCA requirements.
