From Restraint to Responsibility: LCA of a Healthcare Safety Pod

Note: This project was undertaken when Below280 was part of Decerna

Overview

Below280 conducted a healthcare product LCA for UK Pods, a Middlesbrough manufacturer of bean bag safety restraints for clinical settings. The study assessed the full environmental footprint of the V3 Safety Pod, from raw material extraction to factory gate. UK Pods manufactures bean bag safety restraints as a safer alternative to conventional physical restraints in healthcare settings. The V3 Safety Pod provides head, neck and spinal support, reducing injuries and offering a more dignified approach to restraint. UK Pods commissioned Below280 through the Tees Valley Net Zero project to conduct a full Life Cycle Assessment following ISO 14040/44 standards.

Tees Valley Net Zero Initiative

The Tees Valley Net Zero project used UKSPF funding to support business development and decarbonisation across the region.. For LCA specifically, local SMEs could claim funded support covering LCA, EPD and CBAM to accelerate their net zero journey. This allowed smaller manufacturers to quantify their emissions without facing the common hurdles of cost, time and expertise.Across the project, Below280 delivered two verification-ready EPDs and 28 soft LCA supports to local manufacturers.

Objectives

The primary goal was to quantify the environmental impact of producing one V3 Safety Pod. Using openLCA and the Ecoinvent database, Below280 examined the full manufacturing journey from raw material extraction to factory gate. The assessment sought to identify environmental hotspots within the production process and develop sustainable recommendations for improvement.

Methodology

The assessment used a cradle-to-gate boundary. This covered raw material sourcing and transport, all manufacturing steps, energy consumption and packaging.

Data collection included primary information from UK Pods and their equipment manufacturer, supplemented by the Ecoinvent database. The analysis used the ReCiPe Midpoint (H) impact assessment method across 18 distinct environmental impact categories.

Healthcare Product LCA: Key Findings

The healthcare product LCA identified two processes that dominated the carbon footprint. The study then provided specific recommendations for each. The assessment identified the high volume of specific raw materials per pod as the primary contributor.

The LCA also highlighted several stages with minimal environmental impact. These were already running efficiently, freeing UK Pods to focus elsewhere. Several other production stages showed negligible impacts.

Recommendations

Significant opportunities for reducing environmental impacts were quantified. Decerna found that strategic material substitution and process refinement could significantly cut environmental impacts across several of the highest-scoring categories. Recommendations included exploring bio-based material alternatives, switching to recycled or biodegradable packaging, and sourcing materials locally to cut transport emissions.

Benefits

Possessing this LCA positions UK Pods as an environmentally conscious manufacturer in the healthcare sector. The assessment provided:

  • Comprehensive documentation of environmental impacts to meet growing sustainability requirements from healthcare organisations
  • Transparency that builds trust with customers increasingly demanding environmental accountability
  • Support for clients’ own environmental reporting requirements and sustainability targets
  • Proactive positioning ahead of potential regulatory change which may require environmental disclosures

By acting on the findings and tracking their environmental progress, UK Pods can build their reputation as both a healthcare innovator and a responsible manufacturer. In a sector where product efficacy and environmental responsibility both matter, that positions UK Pods ahead of the competition.
